Undoubtedly, John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress is considered one of the most influential books of all time. For many, it is second only to the Holy Bible and has been enjoyed by generations for more than 340 years. This whimsical allegory follows the adventures of a man named Christian who, after discovering a book and, subsequently, having a great burden grow on his back, journeys beyond the forbidden borders of his home in search of the Celestial City and its King.

John Bunyan Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners

John Bunyan (1628-1688) is most famously known for writing «The Pilgrim's Progress», a two-part allegory of the Christian pilgrimage toward salvation. The wildly popular book was written in Bedford during Bunyan's time in prison—he was sentenced to twelve years for holding unlicensed church services. During this time Bunyan also completed an autobiography recounting the story of his own conversion from a life of sin and impiety to one of virtue and spiritual regeneration. «Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners» illustrates the tenets of Puritanism through what Bunyan saw as God's saving grace in his own life. He reflects on a sinful youth, and how it led him towards an impious adulthood. Those who read the novel are comforted by Bunyan's honest admission to feelings of despair and doubt; even today, many people can identify with his struggles, and find inspiration in his faith and religious conviction.

He is most famous for his allegorical work “The Pilgrim's Progress”, a story of the Christian pilgrimage toward salvation and widely considered one of the most important works of religious English literature. “The Pilgrim’s Progress” was published in 1678, but was written several years earlier during Bunyan’s time in prison from 1660 to 1672, when he was sentenced to twelve years for holding unlicensed church services outside of the established Church of England. During his imprisonment, Bunyan also completed “Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners”, an autobiography recounting the story of his own conversion from a life of sin and impiety to one of virtue and spiritual regeneration. “Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners” was published in 1666 and illustrates the tenets of Puritanism through what Bunyan saw as God’s saving grace in his own life. He reflects on his sinful youth and how faith led him away from an impious adulthood. Those who read this work are comforted by Bunyan’s honest admission to feelings of despair and doubt; even today, many people can identify with his struggles, and find inspiration in his faith and religious conviction. Bunyan Campbell John The Pilgrim's Progress - The Original Classic Edition

In contrast to Dante, Bunyan fills his allegory with real people, not just stereotypes – or even archetypes. Though his characters have names like Honest, Feeble-mind, and Ignorance, they come across as real people given a nickname. The names apply to some extent, of course, but not to the point of making caricatures out of the characters.
This volume contains parts I and II of Pilgrims progress. The first part concerns the journey of a pilgrim named Christian, while the second describes the journey of his wife, Christiana. Both start from the City of Destruction and both encounter many of the same obstacles – the Slough of Despond, the Vanity Fair, the Castle Doubt – before reaching the gates of the Celestial City. Other than that, their journeys are rather different, for Christian travels on his own, with a bit of help here and there, and with one or another traveling companion, but his progress is almost entirely his own. Christiana, by contrast, travels as part of an ever growing company, who support one another and who are defended by one or two powerful champions.
You never lose sight of the allegory, but this work is not a mere tract. The story itself and the characters entertain – even today.
